Black screen will not power up.

My phones screen turned orange and shut off, I do not know if the battery died or not, but I put it on the charger that i know works and it chimed as th0ught it was powering up, but after five minutes it still will not come on, and it shows no signs that it charging as it usually does, no lights, screen just black. I have it plugged into my computer now, has not been recognized yet but still gives the indication that is is being charged.  Is there something else I can do before I dump the phone and purchase a new one?
