There are things you need to consider when updating your software to the most recent version available. If you haven’t received the update via OTA, try doing these workarounds:
1. Ensure that your phone is fully charged and connected to a WiFi network. Then try to do a manual update.
> Launch Settings.
> Scroll to Software Update and check for updates.
> Follow the onscreen prompts to download and install the update.
Your phone will restart by itself after the update.
You also need to have sufficient memory space on your device to install the update. If needed, clear out as much memory space as possible on your galaxy Note 9. Here’s how you can free up your phone’s memory:
> Clear the internal storage cached data.
> Delete the large applications, files (videos, pictures), or consider alternatives to deleting files.
> Free up the Google Photos device storage
> Transfer files to a computer or MicroSD Card
If you are still unable to update to Android 10, try troubleshooting your device.
1. Soft Reset your Galaxy Note 9.
Doing so will refresh your phone’s software and eliminate minor glitches that prevent the phone to receive the software update.
> Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
> Wait as the phone restarts.
Once your phone is back on, try to update it manually. If the problem persists, try the next option.
2. Use Smart Switch to update your device.
If you can’t download and install the recent update from the phone itself, try doing it from a computer using the Smart Switch program.
> Go to Samsung’s Smart Switch website and download Smart Switch for Windows or macOS.
> Install and open Smart Switch on your computer and connect your phone via its USB cable.
> if this is the first time you plug in your phone to the computer, tap Allow on the pop-up on your phone to give it access.
> Wait for a few minutes for the phone to be recognized by Smart Switch and you’ll see several options on the main screen for backing up and restoring. You do not need to backup or restore your phone to initiate an update.
> A software check is performed when you plug in, and Smart Switch will list your current software details. If there is a software update available for your phone, you’ll be notified on the main screen.
> If available, Click Update to install the latest software. It will download first to your computer, then sideload to your phone.
However, if it still shows that your phone is up-to-date or no update available, proceed to the next tweak.
3. Wipe the cache partition of your Note 9.
Possible corrupted cache data in the dedicated partition can also hinder the phone to receive the recent update. If this is causing the problem, do these:
> Turn off your phone.
> Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
> When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key.
> When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
> Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
> Press the Power key to select.
> Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
> When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
> Press the Power key to restart your Galaxy Note 9.
If the problem still persists after exhausting all the possible tweaks provided above, you may need to restore your phone to factory default settings. Make sure to backup your files beforehand. Then do these:
> Turn off your Galaxy Note 9.
> Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
> When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
> When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
> Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
> Press Power button to select.
> Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
> Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
> When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
> Press the Power key to restart the phone.
After the reset, try to update the phone again using the manual process or via Smart Switch.
